Jacob S. Blackford
Associate / Registered Patent Attorney
Jacob Blackford is an intellectual property attorney and registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He assists clients with acquiring, protecting, and enforcing patent, trademark, and copyright rights across a range of technologies and industries.
Jacob guides clients through all stages of patent prosecution, from invention disclosure and application drafting through examination and issuance. He enjoys working closely with inventors to understand the technical and commercial significance of their innovations, allowing him to draft and prosecute patent applications with both legal protection and business objectives in mind.
Jacob also represents clients in the enforcement and defense of intellectual property rights, including patent and trademark disputes before federal courts, state courts, and administrative tribunals. His litigation practice is grounded in careful analysis, strategic advocacy, and a practical focus on efficient, client-centered outcomes.
Before entering the legal profession, Jacob earned an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Biology and worked in regulatory and quality management systems roles for medical device manufacturers in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. That experience gives him practical insight into the challenges companies face when developing, commercializing, and bringing regulated products to market.
Jacob’s scientific background and interest in innovation led him to patent law. While attending Drake University Law School, he completed a federal judicial externship with Judge Stephen H. Locher of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He also served as an Articles Editor on the Editorial Board of the Drake Law Review and captained Drake Law’s Intellectual Property Moot Court team, gaining substantial written and oral advocacy experience.
Before joining Brick Gentry, Jacob practiced as an associate attorney at an intellectual property boutique law firm in Des Moines, Iowa, where he focused primarily on patent prosecution in the biotechnology, chemical, and agricultural technology fields.
